Remember Tae Bo? If you were around in the mid-to-late 90s, you probably recall the VHS workout craze that combines moves inspired by martial arts and boxing with aerobics. It was incredibly popular at the time and those late-night infomercials featuring the exercise’s founder, Billy Blanks, make it hard to forget. And now, thanks to Blanks and YouTube (and we’re sure his recent Geico ad didn’t hurt), Tae Bo is making a comeback.
It was once king of the at-home fitness videos, but it faded away after Y2K and dial-up Internet became things of the past and trends like CrossFit came along. But the principles of Tae Bo never really went away and kickboxing classes featuring punching and kicking have remained popular over time. And with more people working out at home since the start of the pandemic, Tae Bo has become popular once again.
Last year, Blanks was back on the scene with a video called “Tae Bo For Real” with a 25-minute workout featuring his wife and daughter. And since then, he’s earned a following of nearly half a million YouTube subscribers with videos, including the “SUMMER SLIMDOWN” and the “WARRIOR WORKOUT.” Blanks gives social media credit for his resurgence, saying, “I think because of social media, fitness is in people’s eyes 24/7.”
