Best man speeches are a wedding tradition, but it can be tough to find the right mix of heartfelt and humorous. A best man recently learned that the hard way when he threw in an impromptu joke at the end of his speech and it not only fell flat but backfired and he was asked to leave the wedding by the bride herself. In a since-deleted post on Reddit, he explains that he put a lot of time and effort into writing and memorizing the speech, but he struggled to think of something to say about the bridal party since he didn’t know any of them.
His friends suggested he just say something unscripted that would either be funny or sound genuine. So that’s what he did and he says the speech was going well, with people getting the jokes and laughing at the right times until he got to the end and did an off-the-cuff joke. The best man said, “Bridesmaids, I am a bit short of time here and I don't really know you all so I'd just like to say that five out of six of you look stunning today....figure it out amongst yourselves.”
But instead of laughs, he was met with silence, explaining, “The room went dead and I knew I’d really f-ed up.” Even worse? A bridesmaid started crying!

- He tried to apologize to the one in tears, but it didn’t help.
- And that’s when the bride came up and told him, “I think it’s best you leave” and the groom stood behind her nodding.
- He later messaged everyone to apologize and also posted a public apology on the wedding Facebook page, but that only resulted in the bride’s grandma telling him off in a message.
