What are the first things you check out on someone’s dating profile? Age, location, and height may be top stats singles want to know about their potential love interests, but now Bumble is giving users a new way to reveal who they are. In celebration of National Sober Day, the dating app is adding a new “Sober” badge so users can share their alcohol preferences right on their profile.
Bumble already allowed users to include their zodiac sign, political orientation, religious identity, pets, and family planning preferences in its “badge menu,” which is the top part with all the juicy stuff before the bio. And previously, Bumble gave users options for identifying whether they drink or smoke “frequently,” “socially,” or “never.” But as Charlotte Brown, Bumble’s DEI Engagement Manager, points out, “Folks who never drink are not necessarily sober.”
So with that in mind, and as so many people are reevaluating their relationship with alcohol, she says Bumble felt it was important to give their sober community an easy way to share that. She says letting users express their sobriety is another way to make Bumble “a safer and more welcoming place” and that it will help them find compatible matches or ditch those who aren’t right off the bat. And it saves them having to decide when to “disclose” their sobriety to a match.
