While it’s usually the norm to see white dresses at weddings, and black ones at funerals, it seems more and more brides are turning to the dark side on their wedding day. Experts say there has been a growing interest in brides wearing black on their big day, with some suggesting the pandemic may have had something to do with the change of heart.
"We are definitely seeing an increase in brides considering alternative styles or colors, like black gowns, tying into the trends that we’re seeing during the pandemic of non-traditional styles," Laura McKeever, the bridal senior manager, brand PR, philanthropy & communications at David’s Bridal, tells Fox News. “Pre-pandemic ‘black wedding dresses’ didn’t even rank in our search terms last year and it’s doubled in the last 12 months.”
According to McKeever, there’s been a 3.7x growth each year in sales of black bridal gowns. And Google Trends notes that searches for black wedding gowns have quadrupled since January 2004, and is currently at its highest, likely due to the upcoming fall wedding season. Vera Wang has been making black wedding dresses since as far back as 2012, and now designers like Maggie Sottero, Leanne Marshall, Galia Lahavand Marchesa have also added them to their collection.
And while you may think of New Yorkers as folks who always wear black, apparently they aren’t the most likely to want to go dark for their wedding. The most searches for black dresses are actually coming from Kentucky, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Kansas, and Idaho.
