Hey Chipotle fans – ever notice that there are no sweets on the menu? Sure, the chain is known for rapid-fire tex-mex, but those in the known say there might be several reasons why desserts have never been available.
For one, McDonald’s was a major Chipotle investor from 1998-2005 and tried to push Chipotle to offer breakfast items and drive-thrus. When that didn’t work out, McDonald’s bailed out of the partnership. But even as recently as 2019, Chipotle reiterated that they’re not interested in serving breakfast because it might interfere with the lunchtime rush. So what does that have to do with desserts?
Actually, the chain has been toying with adding dessert menu items that include fried fritters (bunuelos), a Mexican chocolate shake and an apple dipping sauce but none of these have passed the test with the execs in charge.
- The Mexican Shake actually showed up at Chipotle’s NYC test kitchen in 2018 but it didn’t make the cut.
The bunuelos bombed after a regional introduction in 2017 and this was during the time Chipotle was having a PR nightmare with E. coli outbreak, and the reviews were not great.
Still, hope isn’t lost – word is that the company it still experimenting so don’t lose hope!
