Today is Giving Tuesday, a movement that promotes “the power of radical generosity” around the world and a new survey tells us just how much Americans are giving back to their communities. In the poll of 2-thousand people, 70% say this is the most wonderful time of the year to give back. And it seems they’re staying busy doing it, averaging eight good deeds a month, for a total of 96 in a year.
According to the survey, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Vitamin Angels for Giving Tuesday, the top 10 good deeds Americans are doing monthly are:
- Be kind to strangers (55%)
- Actively recycle (55%)
- Pick up trash/litter around the neighborhood (49%)
- Donate money to charity (48%)
- Give money to homeless people they see on the streets (43%)
- Donate clothing to charity (38%)
- Volunteer (35%)
- Donate food to a food bank or shelter (32%)
- Pay it forward (like at a coffee shop or the grocery store) (35%)
- Donate blood (12%)
The poll also reveals:
- 65% of respondents are making it a goal to donate more, with 62% planning to give at least $100 more before the end of the year.
- 44% plan to donate to charity in honor of Giving Tuesday.
- When choosing a charity to donate to, 69% prefer those that work locally and 60% are more likely to give to charities that help children.
- As for what motivates people to give back, 72% say there’s nothing they enjoy more than helping others.
- And 82% believe in helping people because it’s the right thing to do.
