The Window Seat of an Airplane Is as Damaging as Sitting in a Tanning Bed

Some people love the window seat while others…not so much. The window seat on an airplane has its pros and cons. For example, you get a view and it's slightly more comfortable if you’re wanting to rest your head.

On the other hand, it can be a pain having to climb over two other people every time you need to use the restroom. There’s also another major con to sitting in the window seat. According to luxury travel hacker, Michelle G, you should really be wearing sunscreen on a plane, especially if you’re in the window seat!

Michelle cites a study saying that “the amount of UVA rays windows let in, which cause long term skin damage, an hour on a plane at normal flight altitude is equivalent to about 20 minutes in a tanning bed.”

Her claim is backed up by Sweta Rai of the British Association of Dermatologists.“The window next to you on a plane may be small, but you’re closer to the ozone layer on a flight by tens of thousands of feet.” He added,” the sun’s rays are much more harmful at this level and we should all be wearing sunscreen when flying.”
