Wedding trends come and go and it seems that applies to honeymoons, too. A traditional honeymoon was a time for newlyweds to relax, celebrate and have a lot of sex. And it made a lot of sense back when couples didn’t live together before tying the knot. But times have changed and relationship coach Jonathan Bennet says these days, “the traditional honeymoon as a romantic getaway to focus on sex has lost a lot of its original purpose.”
And that’s where a new post-marriage trend comes in: the group honeymoon, or “buddymoon.” Does bringing your friends along on your honeymoon sound crazy to you? It seems lots of folks are interested. According to a survey of 2-thousand people between the ages of 18 and 35, nearly half (47%) say they’ve been on, or would consider going on, a trip with friends to celebrate their union.
So how do you know if a buddymoon is right for you?
- If you have a tight-knit group of friends or your pals don’t get to see each other often because you don’t live nearby, a buddymoon could be the ideal extended catch-up session.
- If you’re planning to have kids in the near future, your honeymoon could be your last big trip for a while, so you may want to have your besties there with you.
- And if you have a destination wedding, your guests could just add a few extra days to their trip to keep the celebration going with you and your new spouse.
- Of course, a buddymoon isn’t for everyone. And if the idea of a week-long group hang after planning and hosting the biggest party of your life leaves you feeling drained, you probably just want to skip this trend. Or if you just want to relax as a couple without anything interrupting your romantic trip, leave your buddies at home and just take a honeymoon.
