What Younger Generations Expect From Their Workplace

46% of the workforce is currently made up of Gen Z and millennials. If employers want to keep the peace and retain their younger workers, it’s time they start asking what it is that Gen Z and millennials expect from their workplace. The global analytics firm, “Gallup” asked Gen Z and millennials what they look for most in an employer. Here’s what they found:

  • Above all, Gen Z and millennials want an employer who cares about their wellbeing. This was a “want” in the workplace before COVID, but it’s even more so today. Younger employees want to work somewhere where they feel their boss actually cares about their physical and emotional health.
  • They want their leaders to be ethical. Gen Z and millennials want to know what actions are being taken by the company to “address moral blind spots” within the office and the community.
  • Older millennials want open, transparent leaders. Millennials are evidently still scarred from the 2008 financial crisis meanwhile some feel like they’ve been “duped into easy but burdensome student loans.” As a result, millennials want to have confidence in their leadership.
  • Gen Z and younger millennials want leaders who support a diverse and inclusive workplace. This isn’t even a want. It’s a must that companies uphold diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) standards.
  • They seek development opportunities and quality managers. Younger generations expect to be coached and developed in their workplace. They want to work under someone who is interested and actively engaged in their career growth.
