The Benefits of Drinking Sparkling Water

Are you hooked on sparkling water? And whether your brand is Bubly, LaCroix, Spindrift, or one of the dozens of others on the market, it turns out, there are some benefits to drinking them beyond keeping you hydrated.

A new study finds sparkling water may actually improve your mood. Nutrition and dietetics researchers in Canada asked over 100 participants to evaluate their “sensory perception and emotional responses” to carbonated fruity drinks.

  • The results show that carbonation makes people like the beverages they tested more.
  • Study authors explain that’s because they “like the mouthfeel and flavor-enhancing qualities of carbonated beverages.”
  • Researchers conclude people associate sparkling water with special events and festivities.

As far as those other benefits to going bubbly with your water:

  • A previous study finds it may help keep you regular. Participants with indigestion found it improved that condition, and reduced constipation, too.
  • Another previous study suggests that seltzer water may provide better hydration than flat water because “the natural minerals in the sparkling water act as electrolytes.”
  • And yet another study finds fizzy water could help keep your appetite under control. Women in the study who drank seltzer water reported higher fullness scores than those who drank flat water.
