The Teapot Pose Is No Longer Cool, According to Gen Z

The “Teapot Pose,” as Urban Dictionary explains, “is predominately used by females of the ‘basic’ variety on social media platforms such as Instagram or Facebook. It can be used singularly but is often utilized for group photos.”

Every woman above the age of 25 has likely hit this pose when the cameras come out — turned to one side, chest pushed out, hand on hip. But now? In another personal attack on millennials, Gen Z is saying the teapot pose is out.

It’s no wonder why this pose is so innate for millennials. Just take a look back at celebs on the red carpet from 2004 through 2014 and you’ll see this pose everywhere!

As of 2022, more “natural” poses are in. Christine Buzan is @lookgoodinphotos on TikTok who shares tips for women on how to pose in photos. She broke down posing trends on the SAG Awards red carpet from earlier this year proving that there’s more than just the teapot pose out there. Here were the results of 72 women who walked solo on the red carpet.

  • Teapot 35%
  • Hands by side 38%
  • Both on hip 8%
  • Hands in front 10%
  • 10%
