MYM: DC Organization Providing Free School Supplies TODAY

The annual Bellevue Back-to-School Bash is back!

The woman behind it is Monisa Waters who has been a librarian in the District of Columbia for 16 years. She says early on she would notice children coming into her branch, the William O. Lockridge/Bellevue Neighborhood Library, asking if she had school supplies. It made her reflect on her childhood when she would go to school and see her classmates coming in with brand new backpacks and school supplies and she didn’t always have the necessary supplies she needed for back to school.

She decided to do something for the community, so she and a few volunteers started a back-to-school bash -- Her neighborhood event gave away 50 bags the first year, 10 years later the event has grown to 2,500 free bags and much more.

The Bellevue Back-to-School Bash features

  • Educational resources
  • Health screenings
  • Giveaway of backpacks with school supplies.

Local barbers and salons have also agreed to partner and will be cutting hair for free, making sure children go back to school with fresh cuts.

Like every year, it is first come first serve on Monday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Bellevue Library. Children and families can also receive health screenings, and free COVID-19 vaccines and other school-required immunizations.

We share a feel-good story every Monday at 7:40A to start your week off right!
