“Happy Hour” is a term everyone is familiar with, but the name was originally used for U.S. Navy sailors in World War I to relax and let off steam and by the 1970s it was a phenomenon that featured discounted drinks and food and they’re still incredibly popular today. Still, they’re banned in eight states (because some believe happy hours encourage binge drinking) – so unless you live in Alaska, Indiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah or Vermont – the folks at 24/7 Wall St have compiled a list of the best happy hour spots in every state where it's legal. Here’s a sampling of what they found (and if you don’t see your state, CLICK HERE for the complete list):
- Virginia: 23rd & Main (Richmond) – Wednesday thru Friday 4-6:30pm with $6 pretzel bites, Brussels sprouts, burger sliders and pimento dip, select draft beers for $5, select wines for $6 a glass and Margaritas, Moscow Mules and Old Fashions for $6.
- California: The Morrison (Los Angeles and Burbank) – Burgers, beer and Scottish-style pub food running from noon to 6pm every day except Sunday when the hours are 2-6pm.
- Florida: Beaker & Gray (Miami) – Food and drink specials including Suntory Toki Highball, $6 beers, $7 wines and ‘bites’ for $5-$9 Sunday through Wednesday 5-7pm.
- Nevada: Downtown Cocktail Room (Las Vegas) – The oldest continuing happy hour in downtown Las Vegas runs from 5-7pm, Tuesday – Saturday called “halfy hour” with beer, wine, well and call spirits half off. The only food served is a choice of pickles, pretzels, nuts or olives.
- New York: Amélie (New York City) – Three wine tasting flights from 5-7pm Friday and Saturday evenings for $13 and small food plate specials beginning at 4pm, There are also sister locations in San Francisco and Fairfax, Virginia.
- Pennsylvania: Tria Café Wash West (Philadelphia/3 locations) – Monday through Thursday from 5-7pm with a choice of two wines, two beers and one cheese plate for $5.
