Three "Psychological" Ways To Deal With Rude People

When someone’s rude to you, it can damper the rest of your day. But you shouldn’t let it! Therapist Kimberly Moffit is here to help you, by sharing on her TikTok her tips on dealing with rude people. Here are her top three “psychological” ways for you to deal with rude people.

  1. Ignore your Amygala response. What’s that? It’s your fight or flight response. We tend to react physically when someone’s rude to us, but we shouldn’t. “You’re going to take a deep breathe, you’re not going to say anything,” she explains. “This makes them feel deeply unsettled and puts them off their game right off the bat.”
  2. Use the Tom Cruise method. Remember when Tom Cruise was walking the red carpet and someone sprayed water in his face? Instead of getting angry, he asked the attacker if they were OK. “Asking questions calls out the behavior and brings attention to how ridiculous it is, making them look stupid,” Kimberly says. “At this point of the interaction they will feel shame.”
  3. Only do this with your body. People get a hit of dopamine when they’re rude, so deprive them of this. However? Kimberly says that you should turn away from the person being rude, with your palms open, because it asserts dominance.
