How To Make Your Coffee Stronger

Coffee drinkers know that not all coffees are created equal. The beans can have very different strengths, taste and even caffeine content. And the way you brew your coffee can make a difference in its strength as well. Some of us assume an espresso shot is the best way to get moving in the morning, but it doesn’t have the most caffeine per cup, according to tests done by coffee expert James Hoffmann.

The coffee YouTuber and author of The World Atlas of Coffee runs Square Mile Coffee Roasters and won the 2007 Barista Championship, so he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to coffee. Hoffmann used a pricey piece of tech, a $25-hundred Lighttells caffeine analyzer to test the caffeine content of different coffees to see which provides the biggest jolt of caffeine.

To find out, he tested different kinds of coffees, from instant coffee to espresso to brewed coffees and found one brewing method delivers the most caffeine kick. Hoffmann’s brewed espresso had 110 milligrams of caffeine, but when he brewed the same two to two-and-a-half tablespoons of ground coffee using the pour over method? They delivered 180 milligrams of caffeine, nearly a 50% jump! So if you really want the biggest boost from your brew, make it a pour over.
