When you were a kid, how much did you get from the Tooth Fairy for losing a tooth? It probably wasn’t much, compared to what kids are getting today. These days, everything seems to cost more, even losing a tooth, and the Tooth Fairy has raised her rates accordingly, commonly leaving $20 under pillows for a first tooth lost.
It might sound crazy, but you can blame inflation for the increase. Stephen Cohen’s oldest daughter, Lily, got 20 bucks the first time she lost a tooth, as did Josh Willink’s daughter, Remy, and he says it just makes sense with the rising cost of just about everything today. “Growing up you’d get a $1 from the Tooth Fairy,” Willink recalls. “You could go to the store and buy anything you wanted. Now $1 doesn’t even buy you anything.”
Parents often turn to social media to find out the going rate for a first tooth, and many are shocked by what they find. “Sorry mom and dad, the tooth fairy suffers from inflation as well,” a parent writes in a Reddit thread, adding that at their house, rates are now $10 to $20 for a first tooth, and $1 to $5 for each tooth after that. And that’s right in line with the latest data from insurer Delta Dental, which finds that the average is $5.36 per tooth - the highest it’s ever been in the 24 years they’ve been keeping track.
