Try The B.O.R.E.S Method To Save Money On Groceries

Looking for ways to save on your family’s food budget? Becky Guiles, known as the “Freebie Lady” on social media, says her family was in debt and just one step away from financial disaster, which led her to change her shopping habits and it’s really making a big difference for them. Since she started using her method, she says they save about $1,000 a month on grocery bills.

The mom of two uses five easy steps, which she says can be remembered with the acronym “B.O.R.E.S. - B stands for budget, O stands for organized, R is for reuse, E stands for eliminating waste and S is for simplify.” And here’s how it works:

  • Budget- Guiles recommends putting aside $100 a month per person in the household for food.
  • Organized - She continually cleans her pantry of items that are expired or that they’ll never eat, which gives her a clear understanding of what they have on hand and what she needs to buy.
  • Reuse - You can repurpose things like chip crumbs into breading, stale bread into croutons and veggie scraps into vegetable broth.
  • Eliminating waste - “Every time you throw food away, you’re actually throwing money away,” the mom explains. So instead of tossing food, she really tries to find other ways it can be used.
  • Simplify - According to Guiles, the more you start thinking about food like this, and the more you do it, the easier it gets and the more you’ll end up saving.

“These are just basic principles that anybody can do, no matter where you are in life or what your family situation is like,” the pro saver shares. “B.O.R.E.S. is the method I have used to cut our groceries down from $1,200 to $1,400 a month down to only $400 a month.”
