Eating Kiwi Before Bed Can Help You Sleep Better

We’ll do just about anything to get a solid eight hours of sleep, but if eye masks and white noise aren’t helping you snooze, a new bedtime snack just might. Sleep experts say the answer to a great night of rest could be in your fruit bowl right now. Research shows eating a kiwi could help you sleep better.

Studies have found that kiwi can help improve sleep quality and sleep efficiency after a month of eating the fruit before bed. According to experts, that’s because they’re high in serotonin, antioxidants and folate, a B vitamin, “which can help to treat sleep disorders as well as help reset your sleep schedule.”

Along with enjoying a nightly kiwi, these are some other things you can do to lower the chances of having trouble sleeping:

  • Cut the caffeine - That means no coffee or sodas 10 hours before bedtime, as it can take that long for caffeine to completely leave the bloodstream.
  • Stick to a schedule - Following a strict sleep routine with a set bedtime and wake-up time will help your body more easily stay in tune with its circadian rhythm, and give you the best chance of getting the seven to nine hours of quality sleep you need.
  • Adjust the lights - Dimming the lights in the evening two hours before your bedtime can help you start to feel sleepy. Keep your bedroom nice and dark to help you sleep better and get bright light in the morning to help you feel more alert.
