You’ve likely read all about Hollywood’s nepo babies debate. Gen Zers have been calling out this nepotism, but according to new research, they’re actually benefiting from something similar in the workplace. Ethical hiring experts Applied spoke to 2,000 workers and found that “nepo workers” are a real thing.
The survey found that when it came to Gen Z:
- 75% said nepotism is “unfair” but would still use it to advance their careers
- 68% have gotten a job or job offer through nepotism
- 37% of these nepo workers have gotten “middle-management” positions
- 14% are in senior management roles
Applied’s CEO Khyati Sundraram isn’t surprised by these findings, as Gen Zers are known for looking outside of the box, which in this case is a regular job application route. “It’s unsurprising that younger workers are more likely to resort to nepotism,” he explained. “‘Entry-level’ roles increasingly require candidates—who are likely to be new to the workforce—to have a number of years of relevant work experience.”
