Elon Musk has been saying he’s going to remove Twitter's blue checkmarks from legacy verified accounts for a while now, in order to drum up revenue from the site that he purchased for $44 Billion. While Twitter missed its first deadline to remove checkmarks from legacy, non-paying, accounts by April 1st, the site actually did remove them on Thursday.
Celebs from Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Halle Berry, Kim Kardashian, and K-pop supergroup BLACKPINK have all had their blue checkmarks removed from their official Twitter accounts. Even the Pope lost his blue checkmark!
If a celeb (or anyone, really) wants to keep their blue checkmark, they need to fork over $8 a month. Or be someone Elon Musk likes perhaps - Lebron James or Stephen King were offered a “complimentary” blue checkmark from Twitter. Celebs who still have their checkmark deny paying for it, and Musk confirmed he’s paying for some people’s subscriptions “personally.”
