What the perfect man and woman look like, according to AI

According to the findings of the Bulimia Project, artificial intelligence tools trained on social media images found what people tend to prefer... looks-wise.

The study indicates that men tend to prefer blondes, while the ideal man is described as "tall, dark, and handsome."

The research organization tested various AI image generators, such as Dall-E 2, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney, to determine the AI's perception of the perfect male and female bodies based on social media engagement. The AI-generated images largely portrayed Caucasian individuals with tanned skin, slim yet muscular bodies, and predominantly blonde hair. This suggests inherent biases within the AI tools, as the results aligned with outdated beauty standards. People of color were underrepresented in the generated images, indicating a bias towards whiteness.

The Bulimia Project report emphasizes that striving for these unrealistic ideals propagated by social media is detrimental to mental and physical health. The study also highlights the potential dangers and biases associated with AI and the influence of social media, particularly among young people. Previous research has shown a correlation between excessive social media use and negative body image, depression, and self-consciousness in teenagers.
