Taco Bell has been popular with vegans and vegetarians because they offer black beans and refried beans and in 2019, they rolled out a vegetarian menu they say can be customized in over 8-million ways to accommodate a vegetarian diet. But now, one of Taco Bell's most iconic menu items is going vegan.
The chain is testing vegan Crunchwrap, which will be its first fully vegan entree. It’s similar to the original but is made without any animal products. It features a plant-based protein made with soy and pea protein that was created by Taco Bell, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, a “blanco sauce” that’s similar to sour cream, and a vegan nacho sauce inside a crunchy tostada wrapped in a flour tortilla.
But you can’t go to your local Taco Bell and order one just yet. The vegan Crunchwrap is now being tested in three locations, one each in New York City, Hollywood, and Orlando. These cities were chosen because they have “notable vegan populations,” according to the chain. And while it is vegan since it doesn’t contain animal products, strict vegans might not be interested since Taco Bell warns that “cross-contact” might occur among the foods in their kitchens.
