American Airlines Is Cracking Down On Skip Lagging

A North Carolina teenager was interrogated, detained, and banned from flying with American Airlines after attempting to use a travel loophole known as "skip lagging." The popular flight booking hack involves buying a ticket with multiple stops but intentionally leaving the airport during a layover instead of continuing to the final destination.

The teenager's father had purchased a ticket for his son from Gainesville to New York City, with a layover in Charlotte, using the website Skip Lagged, which they had used for several years. However, a gate agent became suspicious upon seeing the teenager's North Carolina driver's license and questioned him. The airline canceled the ticket and forced the family to buy a direct flight.

The father argues that his son, who was traveling alone for the first time, should have received a warning instead of being put in that situation. American Airlines stated that skip lagging violates their terms and conditions, and they are looking into the incident. They also mentioned that the purchased second ticket is unlikely to be refunded, and the teenager will be banned from flying with American Airlines for three years for violating their policies.

This incident serves as a warning for future travelers attempting this hack. #GoodLuck
