Funnel Cloud Spotted Above The Capitol

On a Tuesday afternoon, a funnel cloud was spotted over the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., due to severe weather passing through the city. The image of the cloud was captured by Peter Kiley. However, Storm Team4's Amelia Draper clarified that the funnel cloud was not a tornado and did not touch the ground. The National Weather Service defines a funnel cloud as a condensation funnel that extends from the base of a towering cumulus cloud and is associated with a rotating column of air, but it does not make contact with the ground. The same funnel cloud was also visible over Ronald Reagan National Airport. Severe thunderstorms were moving through the D.C. area that afternoon, prompting a severe thunderstorm watch for the entire region until 8 p.m.
