Lots of people enjoy gourmet cuisine, but cooking it? Not so much. According to a new poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults who regularly cook, 29% get so overwhelmed by some recipes, they ask other people in the household to make the meal instead. And a quarter admits they’re intimidated by cooking in their own kitchen.
The survey, commissioned by Fresh Express and conducted by OnePoll, also reveals:
- About half (48%) of respondents say they feel like professional chefs whenever they use international ingredients while cooking.
- But six in 10 feel intimidated most by international foods they love, because recipes have too many steps or ingredients (45%), seem too complicated (42%), or seem too easy to mess up (32%).
- More than half (57%) say they like using international ingredients in recipes they’re already familiar with, but if given the option to add any three ingredients or spices to upgrade the flavor of a dish, they’d choose garlic (58%), cheese (46%) and bacon (39%).
- When it comes to cuisine from other countries, respondents say Italy and Greece make the best salads (27%), Italy is the top choice for dinner (51%) and France is the “crème de la crème” for desserts (26%).
- If they could learn to perfect just one international dish, people would choose pasta from scratch (27%), enchiladas (27%) or tacos (24%).
The top 10 international dishes people love eating, but are afraid to make:
- Pasta from scratch - 34%
- Beef Wellington - 33%
- Sushi - 27%
- Enchiladas - 25%
- Pad Thai - 25%
