Have you heard of the “olive theory” that’s going around on TikTok? It’s a dating approach that’s based on the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.” But unlike some trends on TikTok, this compatibility test of sorts could actually be worth trying.
The “olive theory” comes from the TV show’s character Lily, who loves olives, and her boyfriend Marshall, who doesn’t love them. On the show, their friend Ted says this is why their relationship works so well. It’s basically the idea that opposites attract and TikTokers think the theory is worth trying, and so does a relationship expert.
Logan Ury, Director of Relationship Science at Hinge, says the olive theory “encourages a deeper exploration of your personal dating parameters.” She thinks people should expand their horizons when it comes to potential partners and go on a date with someone they wouldn’t normally say yes to. Let the olive theory encourage you to date outside your type and Logan says, “You may be surprised by who you end up falling for.”
