How To Beat Dating Burnout

After going on what feels like a million dates and not finding a love connection, some singles start to wonder if they’ll ever find the one. They question if there’s even a point in dating anymore because they feel like they’ve done everything they can do to put themselves out there and all they get is disappointment. It happens to a lot of people and there’s even a name for it: dating burnout.

“Dating fatigue, dating burnout is totally normal and I think it’s something that’s becoming more and more prevalent,” relationship therapist Kimberly Moffit says. Celebrity matchmaker and online dating expert Carmelia Ray agrees, adding that dating burnout could also be called “online dating fatigue” because all the options on dating apps can make people feel overwhelmed, especially if they’re continually going on first dates that lead to nothing.

So what can singles do when dating starts to feel like a chore, instead of fun? These experts say don’t give up, try these instead:

  • Focus on the quality of dates, not quantity - Instead of going on a ton of dates with people you don’t necessarily connect with, Moffit suggests being more selective in who you date.
  • See each date as a new opportunity - Even if you don’t have a spark with a date, it can still have value. Ray explains that every date you go on is an opportunity to learn about yourself and to discover new things.
  • Have a clear purpose in dating - According to Moffit, it’s easier to get burnt out on dating if you’re not sure what you’re looking for. Figuring that out can make dating feel worth it again.
  • Take a break - There’s nothing wrong with hitting pause on dating if you feel burned out. Ray notes that if you don’t start off with the right attitude and believe that all your effort will eventually get you to the right person, then it’s probably time for a break. Just make sure it’s only a break and that you don’t throw in the towel because of burnout.
