SURVEY: Purchases Worth Every Penny

According to a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by OnePoll on behalf of financial app Chime, Americans feel that only about 55% of their purchases are worth the money spent. A mere 15% are satisfied with only 20% or less of their purchases.

Despite this, 64% of respondents have high expectations for each purchase. Items like transportation, appliances, and personal experiences were among the purchases considered most valuable. Indulgent purchases include food, clothing, gifts, and experiences, occurring about four times a month on average. Retail therapy is believed to positively impact mood, though the effect is short-lived at around four hours.

Americans also spend on "bummer items" like taxes and bills. The top reasons for spending are necessity, treating oneself, and convenience. Excitement in purchases arises from finally obtaining desired items or surprising others.

The survey also highlighted indecision during both in-store and online shopping, and Americans tend to budget three months in advance but make around three unplanned purchases monthly. Items like fast fashion and subscriptions are being forsaken due to perceived value. Chime's Chief Experience Officer noted the importance of finding satisfaction in spending, offering affordable financial services to enhance spending experiences.
