MYM: Made Plus Is Crafting Planet-Positive Footwear in MD

Maryland-based shoe company, Made Plus, focuses on producing footwear domestically and in close proximity to consumers. The company's founder and CEO, Alan Guyan, aims to create a "planet-positive" product by making shoes from recycled materials and ensuring minimal waste during production. The company operates with an integrated approach, overseeing every aspect of manufacturing, from design to engineering and operations.

Made Plus has introduced its first shoe line, "The Skiff," a casual sneaker made from recycled water bottles. The production process is tailored to customer orders, meaning shoes are not made until they are requested. The company plans to expand its team from around 10 employees to nearly 20 by the end of the year, with a new line of running and sport-specific shoes planned for early next year.

Although sales are currently online only, Made Plus intends to offer shoes for purchase at the Annapolis Boat Shows. Customers may wait up to a month to receive their orders, as production begins upon ordering. The company also offers customization options for shoe colors. Despite an initial adjustment for customers accustomed to quicker delivery, Made Plus emphasizes the benefits of made-to-order production and ethical responsibility.

Guyan envisions the company's appeal lies in its local production and environmentally conscious approach. He believes that customers will be both attracted by the ethical values and pleased with the quality of the product, creating a positive experience overall.
