New Study Suggests Only 22 People Are Needed To Colonize Mars

A new study suggests that a colony on Mars could be sustained with as few as 22 people, according to an agent-based model (ABM) simulation. The model considered personality types such as agreeables, socials, reactives, and neurotics, and the distribution of these types influenced the necessary group size for different tasks like mining and farming. However, the study's limitations include assuming pre-built infrastructure, energy from a mini nuclear reactor, and regular Earth supplies for the colonists.

Some experts argue that a truly self-sustaining Martian colony would require more individuals and a broader range of skills, with estimates reaching around 110 people to create a functional and autonomous settlement. Additionally, concerns about inbreeding and genetic diversity highlight the need for a larger gene pool for long-term viability.
