We all want to have a good night’s sleep, but people have a lot of different things they do to try and get it. A new survey reveals some generational differences in our sleep habits and bedtime routines.
The poll conducted by OnePoll for Serta Simmons Bedding finds:
- Of all the generations, Gen Z is the most likely to prioritize sleep in general (61%), but they’re also most likely to not finish their nighttime routine before dozing off. They’re the most likely to fall asleep with their phone (68%), forget to brush their teeth (53%), or fall asleep with their daytime clothes on (47%).
- Gen X may be the best at unplugging before bed, as they’re the generation least likely to fall asleep with their phone (25%).
- Just over a third of millennials (36%) take showers or baths before bed, compared to 19% of Gen Z.
- Gen Z’s nighttime routine also includes turning on a fan (22%), putting on a sleep mask (21%), writing in a journal (20%), reading, listening to music and making a to-do list for the next day (all 20%).
- While 28% of boomers need to watch a show or movie before going to sleep, just 19% of Gen Z does.
- People spend just over 26 minutes a day on their nighttime routine, which adds up to an average of 162 hours over a year.
- The top things respondents think about to get a good night’s sleep are the favorite moments of the past day (45%), family or partner (44%) and work (36%).
- More people describe themselves as early birds (38%) than night owls (22%).
The most common bedtime mistakes overall:
- Falling asleep while scrolling or with phone in hand 51%
- Not brushing teeth, washing face or doing skincare routine 41%
- Falling asleep without saying goodnight to family/partner 39%
- Forgetting to turn off TV 38%
- Falling asleep with daytime clothes on 37%
- Forgetting to set an alarm for morning 36%
- Not turning off lights before going to bed 35%
