Google has started rolling out unknown tracker alerts to Android 6.0+ users. This feature aims to enhance user safety by providing automatic notifications when an unknown Bluetooth tracker is detected traveling with the Android device owner. Users can access more information about the tracker, view its travel history on a map, and even make the tracker emit a sound to help locate it discreetly. Initially, this feature works with Apple AirTags, and Google plans to collaborate with other tag manufacturers to expand support over time.
Additionally, users can take action on unknown tracker alerts, such as learning more about the tracker or disabling it physically. Google has also introduced a manual scan feature that allows users to check their surroundings for trackers independently.
The company emphasizes its commitment to user safety and privacy by incorporating feedback from various stakeholders and intends to continually improve the functionality of unknown tracker alerts. Google is also working with Apple to finalize a joint unwanted tracker alert specification to ensure user safety in both Android and iOS ecosystems.
