For some people, becoming a grandparent is the most wonderful thing in the world, but being called grandma? Not so much. It seems the traditional names make a lot of folks feel old before their time, implying they’re knitting blankets and wearing orthopedic shoes now that they have grandchildren. That’s why many are opting to go with alternate names and a new study reveals the most popular options.
The most common alternative names for grandmothers in the U.S. are:
- Gigi
- Nana
- Mimi
- Gran
- Bibi
- Momo
For grandfathers, the most-used alternate names are:
- Poppy
- Pops
- Papi
- G-Pa
- Grandude
- Papa
The study also reveals the top names in each state, aside from “Grandma” and “Grandpa”:
- “Mamaw” is the top pick for Grammies in Alabama, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
- “Pop-pop” is the most common alternative for grandfathers in Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, Missouri, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
- “Abuelo” and “Abuela,” which are Spanish for grandpa and grandma, are most popular in states with large Spanish-speaking populations, including Florida and California.
