Oakton, VA High School Wins 15k from the Band Metallica

Oakton High School's marching band emerged victorious in the inaugural "For Whom the Bell Tolls" competition hosted by the iconic metal band Metallica. The band claimed the top spot in the small high school category with their winning performance titled "Parade to Black." This stellar entry showcased a medley of Metallica tunes, including hits like "The Unforgiven," "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and "Enter Sandman." The performance featured impressive choreography, a captivating drum solo, and creative elements such as band members throwing devil horns and showcasing wallets on chains. Over 450 colleges and high schools participated in the competition

Oakton's triumph comes with a substantial reward of $15,000 in instruments and equipment generously provided by Metallica and its sponsors. Band director Jamie VanValkenburg expressed disbelief, stating, "It's just surreal to me that one of my all-time favorite bands is going to watch my band." This victory adds another unexpected local connection for Metallica, following their majority stake acquisition in Alexandria's Furnace Record Pressing last year. The collaboration between Oakton High School and Metallica underscores the powerful influence of music in bringing communities together.
