This is how long the average person will stick with a hobby

In a revealing study, researchers have discovered that the typical shelf-life of a hobby is a mere 16 months. Polling 2,000 adults, the study identified work commitments, busy family lives, and a lack of motivation as the primary culprits for our short-lived interests.

Interestingly, a quarter of individuals tend to invest substantial amounts, often hundreds of dollars, in hobbies like cycling or learning musical instruments, only to abandon them shortly thereafter. Shockingly, 25 percent have even abandoned a hobby without ever using the purchased items or accessories.

The study also found that the average person juggles three hobbies, dedicating a total of 245 hours annually – over 10 days throughout the year. Reasons for pursuing hobbies include escapism, mental sharpness, and combating boredom.

Cycling emerged as a popular hobby, with four in 10 people owning a bike. However, three-quarters admitted to not riding as much as desired, with the typical adult not having cycled in nearly seven years. Obstacles cited included perceived lack of fitness and absence of specific goals.
