Volkswagen Has Integrated ChatGPT Into Its vehicles

Volkswagen unveiled a groundbreaking integration of the artificial intelligence-based chatbot ChatGPT into its voice assistant. This innovative feature, powered by Cerence Chat Pro from technology partner Cerence Inc., sets Volkswagen apart as the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature in many production vehicles starting from the second quarter of 2024.

This seamless integration is part of the latest generation of infotainment available in models like ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the new Tiguan, the new Passat, and the new Golf. Enabled by Cerence Chat Pro, the integration enhances the capabilities of the IDA voice assistant beyond traditional voice control. Drivers can effortlessly control infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and even get answers to general knowledge questions.

The IDA voice assistant is activated by a simple "Hello IDA" or a press of the steering wheel button, ensuring a hands-free experience for the driver. ChatGPT, without accessing vehicle data, provides additional information during journeys, enriching conversations, answering questions, and offering vehicle-specific details. The privacy of users is a priority, with questions and answers deleted immediately.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for technical Development, expressed Volkswagen's commitment to democratizing technology. The collaboration with Cerence empowers drivers with direct access to the AI-based research tool, highlighting the innovative strength of Volkswagen's new products.

Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, emphasized their pride in the partnership with Volkswagen, providing customers with innovations based on generative AI and large language models. The future holds exciting possibilities, as the collaboration aims to design a new, large-language-model-based user experience for Volkswagen's next-generation in-car assistant. This integration signifies a leap forward in bringing advanced AI capabilities to everyday driving experiences.
