Deaf Elderly Dog Saves Family From Burning Home

In Hector, Arkansas, a deaf blue heeler named Dakota is being hailed as a hero after saving a family of five from a house fire. The 10-year-old pup has been deaf since he was six months old due to an untreated ear mite infestation, but was able to detect the fire through sight and smell. Dakota’s owners, Mike and Jennifer Geurian, who are both volunteer firefighters, credit their dog with saving their lives.

The night of the fire, Dakota woke the Geurians, along with their three children, and led them to safety. Despite the confusion and fear, the family managed to escape unharmed, and are now deeply grateful for their pup's intervention.

Following the event, Jennifer says her perspective on her role as a firefighter and the importance of being prepared has totally changed. Having lost their home and nearly their lives has given her a renewed commitment to serving and giving back to their community, which has been overwhelmingly supportive of them during this challenging time.
