Mother’s Day celebration that was about much more than cards and flowers

In a sunlit community center in Prince George’s County, Maryland, nearly 200 women came together for a Mother’s Day celebration that was about much more than cards and flowers—it was a celebration of fresh starts, dignity, and hope.

The women, many of whom have faced challenges like homelessness, addiction, or domestic violence, were invited by Anew Inspired Change, a Maryland-based nonprofit that supports women navigating difficult transitions. For the 15th year in a row, the organization hosted its annual “pamper party,” offering haircuts, manicures, massages, clothing, and self-care items. But the real gift was something deeper: the feeling of being seen and valued.

For some attendees, the event came at a critical point in their recovery or reentry. Women arrived from shelters, transitional housing, and recovery centers with few belongings and heavy emotional burdens. They left with not only essential items but also a renewed sense of purpose.

The event was the brainchild of Porshia Everett, a former accountant and mother who once noticed that women in shelters often spent Mother’s Day forgotten. What began as a simple gesture—a picnic and a few donated gifts—has blossomed into a full-day celebration, complete with decorations, food, and a strong message of empowerment. This year’s theme, “She Rocks Anew Seed,” symbolized growth and transformation, reminding each woman of her potential to bloom.

As music played and volunteers offered kind gestures, the room buzzed with energy, laughter, and connection. It wasn’t just a party—it was a reset button, a moment of encouragement for women rebuilding their lives.

In a society where life’s hardships often overshadow personal milestones, this early Mother’s Day celebration reminded everyone that every woman, no matter her circumstances, deserves to be honored, supported, and given the chance to begin again.
