Building Better Dads: How a Montgomery County Initiative is Changing Lives

Montgomery County’s Housing Opportunities Commission has been making a real difference in the lives of dads and their families through its Fatherhood Initiative Program. Since it started in 2016, this program has helped over 1,300 fathers gain valuable skills and support to be more involved and present in their children’s lives. The program offers parenting classes, job training, education support, and resources to build stronger relationships and find stable employment.

Many dads have even received financial assistance—around $500,000 total—for things like vocational training and certifications that can boost their careers.

The program is open to fathers who live in low income housing, or are on the housing waitlist. It’s not just about education—it’s about helping dads become confident, responsible, and supportive parents.

And from all the positive feedback, it’s clear this initiative is having a big impact on hundreds of families across Montgomery County.
