We often hear that our 20s are the most exciting and carefree years of our lives. But if you’re in this age group and feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone — and research backs it up.
A 20-year study by the National Study of Daily Experiences (part of the MIDUS project) tracked adults aged 22 to 77 and uncovered some eye-opening insights:
- Highest Stress Levels: People in their 20s reported the most daily stress compared to all other age groups.
- Common Stressors: This decade often involves big life challenges like finishing school, finding a job, and gaining independence.
- Stress Declines With Age: Adults under 30 experienced a 47% drop in stressful events over time — a much larger decrease than the 11% average decline seen across all ages.
- Improved Coping: The findings suggest that as we age, not only do we face fewer stressors, but we also become better at managing stress.
- Stress Isn’t Gone: No matter your age, stress is a part of life — but it tends to become more manageable as you get older.
So while your 20s might feel like the hardest decade yet, this study offers hope: it gets easier with time.
