Feel Good Friday - Woman Turns Jackpot Into Joy for Others

Carrie Edwards, a Virginia woman, turned a lucky lottery win into an incredible act of generosity. On September 8, she matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball number, winning $50,000—but because she’d spent an extra $1 on Power Play, her prize tripled to $150,000.

Instead of keeping the money for herself, Edwards immediately divided it into three $50,000 gifts to causes close to her heart. One went to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, supporting research and resources for families affected by early-onset dementia, in memory of her late husband, Steve. Another donation went to Shalom Farms, a Richmond-based nonprofit working to create a fair and equitable food system. The final gift went to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, which provides aid to active-duty service members, veterans, and their families.

Through her generosity, Edwards transformed an unexpected windfall into a ripple of hope, healing, and support. Her story is a reminder that sometimes blessings come not just to be enjoyed, but to be shared—turning one person’s good fortune into a lifeline for many others.
