MYM: The Purple Tutu Brings Inclusive Dance to Alexandria

Every Sunday in Alexandria, a group of kids meets at the Purple Tutu studio to dance together. It’s a ballet class made especially for children with Down syndrome, and it’s filled with smiles, laughter, and a whole lot of joy.

Teen volunteers from a local high school help lead the class, showing the little dancers each move and cheering them on along the way. The kids love it — they stretch, twirl, and laugh with their friends. For many of them, it’s the highlight of the week.

Parents say the program has made a big difference, helping their kids grow stronger and more confident. One mom shared that her daughter doesn’t even need physical therapy anymore because dancing gives her all the movement she needs.

The Purple Tutu isn’t just about ballet steps — it’s about friendship, confidence, and fun. It’s a place where every child is celebrated for who they are, and where joy fills the room every time the music starts.
