Study: Kim K’s “Slim-Thick” Curves Are Bad For Body Image

Curvy figures like Kim Kardashian’s are more harmful to women’s body image than thin bodies, according to a new study. Researchers from York University in Toronto looked at the link between different body ideals and physical satisfaction in 402 women between the ages of 18 and 25, the group proven to be the heaviest Instagram users. But it’s not thin frames that cause the most issues, it’s the “slim-thick” body ideal that causes “more weight and appearance dissatisfaction,” the study finds.

Study authors showed participants 13 photos of influencers with less than 60-thousand followers with different body types identified as slim-thick, fit and thin.

●     They define slim-thick as “a curvier or more full-body type, characterized by a small waist and flat stomach but large butt, breasts and thighs.”

●     And the study actually name drops Kim K and her sister Kylie Jenner as influencers with this body type who add to women feeling bad about their bodies because of their online content.

The fact that the family of influencers is regularly called out for Photoshopping images doesn’t help. Digitally altering photos makes “the thin ideal even thinner and less attainable for the average woman,” the study says. It explains that “appearance perfectionism” can cause disordered eating, unhealthy weight-control behaviors, low self-esteem and social anxiety. And even now, when body acceptance and size diversity are promoted more than ever, the study claims curvy imagery is “not a positive alternative” to the ultra-thin.

●     “Heavier models with a large butt and thighs do not offer a healthier or more realistic body ideal than the ‘fit’ or ‘thin’ ideals, but may actually be the most harmful type of body-ideal to women’s body image based on the current findings,” the study concludes.
