2023 Holiday Shopping: Spending Trends Amid Inflation

As the festive season approaches, 2023 holiday shopping trends reveal consumer resilience despite economic challenges. Here's a look at what various sources indicate about this year’s holiday spending:

A striking 74 percent of shoppers intend to use credit cards for gift purchases, averaging an expenditure of $680. However, inflation's shadow looms large, with 56 percent of consumers expressing concerns about their ability to purchase as many gifts as previous years due to rising costs.

There's a community-conscious shift among consumers, with 27 percent aiming to spend more at local and small businesses. Additionally, 26 percent are considering conversations with friends and family about capping holiday expenditures.

Despite financial headwinds, year-end sales from October through December are projected to see a modest increase, growing by low single digits compared to last year, showcasing consumer determination to maintain festive traditions.

According to eMarketer forecasts, total retail spending is expected to surge by 4.5 percent, reaching $1.3 trillion during the holiday period, underscoring the sector's gradual recovery.

A noteworthy development from Inc. Magazine highlights the digital revolution: for the first time, more than half of holiday transactions will be conducted via mobile devices. In fact, mobile is poised to dominate, with 71 percent of digital traffic and 56 percent of digital orders.

In preparation for the seasonal rush, retailers are on track to onboard approximately 410,000 temporary workers, marking the industry's most conservative hiring spree since 2008.

Proactive shoppers are already ahead, with four in 10 indicating they've begun ticking items off their holiday lists.

These insights paint a complex but hopeful picture of holiday shopping in 2023, as consumers navigate the dual realities of a recovering economy and the enduring spirit of giving.
