When you’re watching what you eat, you’re always reading labels to know exactly how many calories and carbs you’re ingesting. But when you’re pouring a glass of wine, there’s no label to consult - so we don’t always know how it fits into our weight-loss plan.
But can we even lose weight if we’re also sipping on a glass of vino? Thankfully, registered dietitian Tanya Zuckerbrot says the answer is yes! Knocking back too much of any booze can derail your diet, but enjoying the FDA recommended one five-ounce glass of wine a day won’t do you in - they have anywhere from 80 to 120 calories, depending on the type and region it’s from.
Zuckerbrot’s picks for low-cal whites are chardonnay, Riesling, white zinfandel, and sauvignon blanc. They’re all under 85 calories, 2.6 carbs, and a gram of sugar. But the white wines to watch out for are the sweet dessert ones - they have over 14 carbs, eight grams of sugar, and 164 calories a glass.
When it comes to red wines, she recommends merlot, pinot noir, and rosé - these have less than three grams of carbs, only one gram of sugar, and 88 calories. Be more careful with sherry or marsala, which have more than 14 carbs, eight grams of sugar, and 164 calories. Cheers!
